Climate in Greenville, SC (According to a Native)
The weather in Greenville, SC, can be described as having four distinct seasons. The winters are generally mild, while the summers can be very hot and humid.
The city gets rain 105.1 days a year on average, which is a day below the national average. We also get 220 days of sun, which is 15 days above the national average.
I can tell you from my own experience; we tend to go many days without rain here. But on the flip side, we’ll also deal with many days of rain in a row too. If you’re hoping to get away from too much snow, this is a good place to be, as we don’t see much of it most winters.
We’ll only get a few inches or so, which is a far cry from the feet of snow you’ll find up north. Here are some more things to know about the weather in Greenville.
Winter (December – February)
The Winter weather in Greenville is somewhat consistent. We see our temperatures get down to the 40s and 50s most days.
Ice storms can come about here from time to time, but in general, wintery mixes are only occasional. Power outages aren’t uncommon during these events, have your emergency supplies ready during severe winter weather.
If you’re coming from further up north, you’ll probably see our winter weather as a bit of relief. Our cold isn’t so much blistering, but just chilly.
Spring (March – May)
In the early days of spring, our weather can be a little bit up and down. Some days we’ll get temperatures as high as the 70s or 80s, and then the next day, it’ll get as cold as the 50s or 60s.
So basically, you shouldn’t store away your winter coat just yet. But all in all, spring is one of the mildest times of the year in Greenville. The weather is mostly pleasant, with average temperatures between the mid-60s and the mid-70s.
The term “spring showers” fits with what the weather is like here in March. It’s the rainiest month we have in the year.
But honestly, I notice us go through periods where we have rain for days most of the year. But as said earlier, we’ll then have days of sun after that.
While spring can be known as a time of severe weather such as hail and tornadoes, in Greenville, we typically don’t experience that. If we do have a severe thunderstorm, it tends to come and go pretty quickly.
Summer (June – August)
Greenville, SC, is in the south, so you should expect hot and humid weather. Temperatures don’t drop down very low at night. Having good air conditioning is a must.
Staying hydrated and using sunscreen while you’re outside is also a must too. Temperatures almost never get into the triple digits, thankfully, but we do get a lot of 90-degree weather, particularly in July and August.
Rain totals tend to be at their lowest here in the summer. We do go through periods of drought every now and then. But all in all, with our summers, you can enjoy having barbecues and taking a swim outside at a lake or river.
Fall (September – November)
Mild temperatures and clear skies make fall one of South Carolina’s most pleasant seasons. It doesn’t start getting too cool until about late October into early November.
Seeing all the leaves fall with the different colors is one of my favorite things to see. You’ll still get some surprisingly warm days in these months. You might be able to fit in a few more swims outside before it starts feeling too cold.
Pros and Cons of Greenville Weather
The main benefit of weather in Greenville is you don’t have many natural disasters to worry about. The main bad weather that can happen here is a severe thunderstorm or ice storm. Other than that, tornadoes, earthquakes, and heavy snowstorms are generally rare occurrences.
The only drawback of weather in Greenville for some would be the heat and humidity in the summer. It’s true that our electric bills can be slightly higher than in other places due to energy costs.
