Is Greenville SC Conservative or Liberal?

Politics is a subject I don’t really get into much with people. It’s hard to get anyone to consider a different perspective from their own.

But it’s a part of life, and for many, and it’s an extremely important part. They want to live near like-minded people who share the same values.

If that’s what you’re considering in your decision to move to Greenville, here’s what to know.

Is Greenville SC Conversative or Liberal?

Statistically, according to recent presidential elections, South Carolina tends to be very conservative. It shouldn’t be a surprise to most people given this is the south.

In the 2020 US presidential election, 55% of voters voted Republican, while 43% voted Democrat. Beyond the numbers, Greenville has a strong religious culture.

There are many churches around here. It’s not uncommon for people to be open about their faith. And as is often the case, religious people are generally conservative.

An example of that was a story a few years ago involving an exhibit called the Wings of the City. It was a nude sculpture of men which brought about complaints from some residents for being indecent.

Surprisingly enough, the statue was never removed, which leads to something else that should be considered.

It all depends on where you live

Similar to other cities, liberal people tend to live in more urban areas, and conservative people tend to live in more rural areas.

I’ve ridden around neighborhoods in smaller areas like Five Forks and seen Trump flags and Trump signs. But when I lived downtown for a year, something I noticed were a lot more younger people with a nonconformist vibe.

I can’t recall how much I saw that growing up, but it just felt like the city has gotten more diverse in recent years. It’s definitely possible to find a lot of people who are more liberal-minded.

So I would advise anyone not to be that concerned about the political culture in Greenville. Find your tribe, and don’t be afraid to talk to people with different beliefs than you.
