Clemson South Carolina Rivalry (A Guide for New Greenvillians)
When you live in Greenville for awhile, you’ll quickly become aware of the Clemson South Carolina Rivalry. They’re the two colleges everyone roots for around here.
My family growing up rooted for the Carolina Gamecocks. But ironically, I’d eventually get my college degree at Clemson.
During college football season, you’ll see a lot of orange, purple, and white for the Tigers, and garnet and black for the Gamecocks.
Clemson South Carolina Rivalry Record
Clemson currently has a big edge over South Carolina in football. They’ve had 72 wins, while Carolina has only had 43 wins. But last year the Gamecocks pulled off an upset over the Tigers, winning by one point.
It was down year for my alma mater, as the quarterback play wasn’t as good as it was in past years. They’re hoping Cade Klubnik will bring back some of that Deshaun Watson-Trevor Lawrence championship play.
As far as the Gamecocks, Shane Beamer appears to be turning the team around for the better. They may have a chance to reach a double-digit record for the first time since the old ball coach was running things.
Clemson has the bragging rights when it comes to championships, having won three national championships, two of them coming within the last 10 years under head coach Dabo Swinney.
Which team should you root for?
From my own experience growing up in the Upstate, the majority of people around here are Tiger fans. That would probably be the team to root for if you want to make some fast friends.
But even though the rivalry is something fans get into around here, no matter who you’re rooting for, everyone’s usually pretty friendly and respectful about it.
In the end, it’s all fun and games as we watch our state teams show the country what South Carolina football is all about.
